My public service allows me to repay to society some of the good fortune that I have enjoyed in my life, and to pursue issues on which I am passionate.

I have a great love of and interest in nature and natural wilderness and this has led to my many years of involvement with WWF. I have been Chairman of WWF Hong Kong since 2000 and also sit on the Board of WWF International. This is one of the most interesting and rewarding things I have done in my life, and I have met many admirable people in this field. But it is tempered by the knowledge I have acquired of the quite desperate state of wild nature today, the rate of extinction of species (estimated at 1% per year) and the enormous challenges facing nature, and by extension, mankind. Here's a selection of photos which gives a flavour of my work with WWF.

My work in conservation has also led me to serve on the Government's Advisory Council on the Environment, which has exposed me to many public policy issues and the need to balance competing interests. Apart from our regular meetings, we also go on some interesting field trips, most recently to the Sai Kung area to investigate cases of deliberate environmental damage in rural areas, and to the Kai Tak nullah to be given a very interesting presentation on the remediation works currently being undertaken.

My interest in urban planning issues led me to form a new NGO with Christine Loh, Peter H.Y. Wong, and Paul Zimmerman, called "Designing Hong Kong". Here is a link to its website.

I am called to give talks and speeches on many occasions and am particularly keen to speak to young people, such as recently to 30 very bright young university students of The Young Leaders Development Program, sponsored by the AIA Foundation. My involvement with the Keswick Foundation has also made me familiar with many social welfare issues and worthwhile programmes in Hong Kong and China. I also took part in a rather action-packed day at the new Youth Outreach centre in Sai Wan Ho.
